In 1704, Christoffel became the first official owner, and by 1718 he had expanded to 10,000 vines. The property changed hands several times until the Hampf family acquired it in 1928 and further expanded the vineyards. Dr. Maurice Finlayson bought Hartenberg in 1948 and marketed the wines under the name Montagne. In 1977, the estate was purchased by Gilbeys, who launched the Hartenberg range in 1985.
