Since its first production in 1931, it has only been made in selected vintages. The name \"Nacional\" refers to the original Portuguese vines, which have never been grafted onto American rootstocks, making them resistant to phylloxera. The vines that supply the grapes are planted just below Quinta do Noval and consist of 6000 unique vines that survived the Phylloxera crisis in the late 19th century. The wine is made from traditional port grapes such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão and Sousão. With a low harvest yield of around 12 hectoliters per hectare, it results in a very concentrated wine.
