Muga – Traditional Rioja from the heart of Haro

Bodegas Muga is one of the most traditional producers in Rioja Alta, located in the iconic town of Haro. The family has been producing wines since 1932 with an emphasis on classic vinification, their own cooperage and an uncompromising approach to quality. Muga combines finesse and structure with long barrel ageing and storage ability – in both red, white and rosé.

Vinification and philosophy

All wines from Muga ferment with natural yeast and without temperature control in large oak vats. The house has its own cooperage, which means that they manufacture and repair their own barrels. This gives full control over the wine's development and contact with wood. Both French and American oak are used, and barrel aging lasts from 12 to 36 months depending on the cuvée.

Grapes and stylistics

  • Tempranillo: The backbone of Muga's red wines. Provides structure, dark fruit and aging ability.
  • Graciano & Mazuelo: Used in small amounts for acidity, spice and complexity.
  • Garnacha: Used in rosé and some red cuvées. Gives softness and red fruit.
  • Viura & Malvasia: In-house white Rioja – barrel-fermented wines with a creamy texture and good acid structure.

The style is classic Rioja: integrated palate, elegant fruit, great precision and storage potential. Both Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva are distinguished by balance and complexity.

Selected wines from Muga

  • Muga Reserva: Tempranillo-dominated wine with 24 months in barrel and 12 months in bottle. Great balance and classic Rioja character.
  • Prado Enea Gran Reserva: Only in top years. Aged up to 36 months in barrel. Elegant and complex wine with great aging potential.
  • Muga Blanco: Viura-based barrel-fermented white wine. Freshness, nuts, lemon and salt.
  • Muga Rosado: Juicy and gastronomic rosé made from Garnacha and Tempranillo. Fermented in wood and steel.

Frequently Asked Questions about Muga

Does Muga use French or American oak?

Both. Muga uses both French and American barrels – and makes them in-house in its own cooperage. This gives maximum control over the style and development of the wine.

Is Muga Reserva suitable for storage?

Yes. Even the house Reserva can be aged for 10–15 years. The Gran Reserva wines like Prado Enea can be aged even longer and develop tertiary aromas.

What characterizes Muga's white wines?

They are barrel-fermented and often aged in oak, giving them a full-bodied and creamy style. The acidity is preserved through cool microclimates and gentle vinification.
